When the papacy temporarily left war-torn Italy, Avignon became the centre of the Roman Catholic world. During the 14th century the papal court became a wealthy centre promoting the arts and learning. The wealth is now stripped off the walls but the proportions of the rooms leave you to image the grandeur. Olga
