Avignon : presentation

Avignon well known for its Palace of the Popes, where several popes and antipopes lived from the early 14th to early 15th centuries. All the city is now influenced by this architectural and cultural change.
Avignon has a remarkable location on the east bank of the Rhône River, at a point where the narrow valley opens into a broad delta plain, north-west of Nîmes. A stronghold of the Gallic tribe of Cavares that became the Roman city of Avennio, it was a muchfought-over prize, although it was neter thought to be of any primary importance until it became the capital of papacy in 1309. In 1348, Avignon was bought by Clement 1;1, the fourth of seven popes, .fom Queen Joan of Provence. Thereafter it remained papal property until the French Revolution (the papacy lasted .fom 1309 to 1377). The papal territory was a place of sure asylum and the city harboured heretics, Jews, criminals, brigands and adventurerers. its taverns and houses of pleasure making it a byword for debauch.

Following the departure of the seventh pope in 1377, papal legates continued to govern the city until1791, when it was annexed by the French National Assembly. Many of the citys churches, chapels and houses were built during this period. The ramparts built by the popes still gird the town, Doms rock and the towering Romanesque cathedral Notre-Dame-des-Doms, burial place of two of the popes. Fate lead the city to develop on the other side of the Rhône river, at Villeneuve-lès-Avignon, now in neighbouring Gard département. The best overall views of the city are to be had from here.
Provence was just the other side of the river. At the end of the 13th century. Philippe le Bel built a fort at the end of Saint Bénézet bridge. A hundred years later; John le Bon and Charles V constructed Saint André fort. Protected by the forts Villeneuve had already began to grow when the popes amrrived in 1309. However, following the arrivaI of the popes, many cardinals, unable to find comfortable accommodation within the walled town, crossed the bridge and had magnificent residences built on the side of the river. Thus, Villeneuve became the "Cardinals' city". After the popes returned to Italy the city continued to prosper light up until the French Revolution.
